Gibbon native called to active duty
Mason Schmidt first enlisted in the National Guard after his junior year of high school on July 1st, 2014. Over the next year he was prepped for basic training which would happen after high school graduation. “I had to go once a month to, it’s called a recruit sustainment program. It’s basically to prepare you for basic training,” he recalls. “It’s something only the National Guard does and it is very helpful.” It consists of physical training and classes about navigation, driving, shooting, etc.
