Dr. James Youngblom

Jim Youngblom of Turlock, California died in a tragic hiking accident on June 25, 2021 in Yosemite National Park. Jim was born Dec. 8, 1956 to Virgil and Shirley Youngblom of Lafayette, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in First Lutheran Church, Lafayette. His educational journey took him from Lafayette Elementary to Winthrop High to Winona State and culminated with his Ph.D. in cell biology from the University of Minnesota. Jim married Janey Kim of Montclair, New Jersey in 1984. They have two children, Reuben and Emily. Teaching careers took the family from St. Paul, Minnesota to San Francisco to Turlock, California where both taught at California State University Stanislaus. Jim loved learning and teaching. He was currently Biology Department Chair. Jim was an avid outdoorsman and pursued many activities as a participant or fan. The family vacation home in Truckee was the location of many wonderful memories and stories. Jim had a knack for remembering and sharing good stories. He was also an avid reader: non-fiction only! He loved anything with rhubarb and lamented not being able to grow it well himself. Jim was a devoted family man. He and Janey supported one another. He participated in as many of Reuben and Emily’s many activities as he could. Skiing and fishing with them were high on his list. He loved to travel and especially loved when the family could travel together. They traveled the world. Trips to Minnesota to visit and celebrate family milestones maintained the connections there. As his parents aged, Jim’s trips to Minnesota were more frequent. Jim was generous with his time, whether helping family, advising students or aiding strangers he met. His legacy will include many strong memories of this willingness to help, to support, to encourage… Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil in April 2021, Shirley in May 2021, his parents-in-law, Dr. Young Kim in October 1989 and Catherine Kim in February 2021 and brother-in-law Mark Schulman. He is survived by his wife Janey, Reuben and partner Wynter, Emily and fiance Lukas, siblings Caren Grotberg, Bob (Cindy), Don (Inger), Rich (Kay) and half-brother Mark Hall (Sharon). In-laws, David (Cecelia) Kim, Dan (Jane) Kim, Sally Miller and Liz Schulman and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A family memorial service will be held in Truckee.
