Agnes Sandquist

Agnes W. Sandquist, age 95, of Winthrop passed away Thursday, September 2, 2021, at Oak Terrace Health Care Center in Gaylord. Memorial service were held Friday, September 10, 2021, 11:00 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop with interment in First Lutheran Cemetery in Lafayette. Memorials preferred to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, P.O. Box C, Winthrop, MN 55396 or send a check to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011. Clergy officiating was Reverend Paul Meitner. Organist was Vicki Kiecker. Soloist was Cheri Sandquist, “In The Garden”; Accompanist: Rory Prodoehl. Reader was Marie Schmidt. Congregational hymns sung were: “The Old Rugged Cross”, “How Great Thou Art”, and “What A Friend We Have in Jesus.” Urn bearers was John Sandquist. Agnes is survived by her: children, Roger Sandquist and his wife, Patricia of Portland, OR, Robert Sandquist and his wife, Sandra of Omaha, NE, Jane Weber and her husband, Marvin of Lafayette, MN, Mona Freidrichs and her husband, Charles of Columbia, MO, John Sandquist of Gaylord, MN, LaRay Sandquist and his wife, Charmaine of Winthrop, MN, Linda Evenson and her husband, Mark of Lakeville, MN, Randall Sandquist and his wife, Stacey of Lafayette, MN, and Marie Schmidt and her husband, Michael of Winthrop, MN; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; brother, Gordon Thenemann and his wife, Suzanne of CA; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Sandquist; parents, William and Mary Thenemann; grandchildren, Andrew Sandquist and Alex Schmidt; siblings, Marvel (Paul) Moore, Carl (Cecelia) Thenemann, and Helen (Lee) Henke. Agnes Wilhelmina Martha Sandquist was born on February 24, 1926, in Cornish Township, Sibley County, Minnesota. She was the daughter of William and Mary (Borchert) Thenemann. Agnes was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in her faith, both at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop. She received her education in Winthrop and attended Winthrop High School with graduating Class of 1944. On April 10, 1944, Agnes was united in marriage to Elmer Sandquist at Gustavus Adolphus Church in Minneapolis. After their marriage, the couple resided in rural Lafayette. Agnes and Elmer were blessed with nine children, Roger, Robert, Jane, Mona, John, LaRay, Linda, Randall, and Marie. She was a loving homemaker and mother. Agnes was employed at Fingerhut and 3M, retiring in 1974. Agnes and Elmer shared 44 years of marriage when Elmer passed away on November 28, 1988. Agnes was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop and the Ladies Aid. Agnes enjoyed gardening, flowers, quilting, and volunteering at the nursing home. She cherished the time she spent with her family and friends. Agnes also became primary caregiver to her son, John, who became disabled in 1985. Agnes passed away on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at Oak Terrace Health Care Center in Gaylord at the age of 95 years. Blessed be her memory.
