Mark Mattes, 70, of Gibbon died Saturday, March 19, 2022 in Gibbon. Funeral service were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2022 at Peace Lutheran Church in Winthrop with Pastor Robert Miner officiating. Visitation was held Friday 4 – 7 p.m. and Saturday 10- 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Winthrop. The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon is handling the arrangements. Mark is survived by his wife, Aggie Mattes of Gibbon; son, Jaimie (Tricia) Mattes of Woodbury; daughters, Tara (Lon) VanMaasdam of Gibbon, Rachel (Mason) Pavel of Forest Lake; grandchildren, Brett, Alex, Addison, Kara and Jack; a brother, Mike (Princess) Mattes of Gibbon; sisters-in-law, Barb Mattes of Hutchinson, Bernice Sorenson of New Ulm and Brenda Fromm of Sleepy Eye; a brother-in-law, Duane Hoechst of Lake Crystal, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Deanna Hoechst; brothers, Pat Mattes, Bob Mattes, Dean Mattes and Clark Sorenson; and a nephew Joshua Mattes. Mark Dale Mattes was born June 27, 1951 in New Ulm to George and Helen (Simmet) Mattes. He attended St George Catholic School through sixth grade and was a 1969 graduate of Gibbon High School. He was united in marriage to Agnes Schweiss on May 22, 1970 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Fairfax and were blessed with three children. Mark was employed at Byro Farms for 39 years, and retired on Aug 1, 2014. After retirement he worked part time at Schaefer Crane and helped area farmers when called upon. Mark loved helping others. When not working, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and hunting and fishing. His smile and contagious laugh will be missed by all who knew him. Blessed be his memory.
