Department responds to field fire

The Winthrop Fire Department was called to a fire in a field just east of Winthrop at about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Fire Chief Justin TenEyck said that by the time the department was on scene, the fire had spread several hundred yards and was rapidly expanding due to the high winds. The fire would jump a couple of drainage ditches before they were able to contain the spread, stopping short of a partially standing soybean field. The fire affected about 80 acres but no crops were lost. TenEyck said they suspect a cigarette ignited the fire as no field work was being done in the area. Winthrop Police, Gaylord Fire and Sibley County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the fire. Photo by Michael Mattison
