GFW School Board postpone superintendent’s contract decision

by Doug Hanson

One of the items on the GFW School Board agenda Monday evening was the three-year extension of Superintendent Jeff Horton’s contract. A Board committee of Chairman Mike Kuehn, Vice Chair Jason Haas and Clerk Marissa Lee are appointed to negotiate a superintendent’s contract. The Superintendent and Board Chair prepare the agenda. The contract was listed in the consent agenda and offered Horton $140,454 the first year with increases the following two years. The contract also listed the duties and benefits for the position. Prior to the meeting, Board Director Drew Schmidt stated that he would be asking to have the contract moved to a regular action item so a discussion could be held. Superintendent Horton stated that since it was senior night at the volleyball game he suggested that the superintendent’s contract and a closed executive meeting to deal with a legal issue be removed from the agenda. Director Lee made a motion to make that change and also added a policy revision concerning a consent agenda item. This policy was handed out at the meeting. The first reading of this policy stated that in order to remove an item from the consent agenda, the majority of the Board would need to approve the move prior to the adoption of the agenda. The policy and the Superintendent’s contract will be on a future agenda. More on the Board meeting in next week’s News.
