Farm City Fun Fest begins Friday, parade to highlight Sunday activities

The days are counting down for Winthrop’s annual Farm City Fun Fest celebration.
Friday afternoon marks the beginning of the festivities as the park will be filled with many events.
The Sleepy Eye Area Concertina Club will be entertaining under the big tent from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
T-Bird Community Arts is the new sponsor of the pork chop feed as they will be serving from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. under the tent as well.
A dessert ad snack social will be sponsored by the Winthrop General Federation of Women’s Club with proceeds going to the Winthrop Police Department K9 project.
Come join the fun for BINGO under the tent beginning at 6:30 p.m. This will last until 8 p.m. and is sponsored by the Chamber and Transit Trailblazers 4-H Club.
New this year is the kids and teenager puzzle palooza. Kids ages 8-12 will gather at 6 p.m, in the south park shelter to put together a 100-piece puzzle, drink some root beer and eat a pizza. The teen event will begin at 7:30 p.m. as they will receive a pizza, root beer and have to put together a 300-piece puzzle.
Sports will be prevalent throughout the weekend and several will be held on Friday.
The 5K run sponsored by LaceFit Nutrition will begin in the park and end at the LaceFit location on Main street and Second Street. The run will begin at 7 p.m.
GFW JO volleyball will be hosting a sand volleyball tournament on Friday as well.
The annual softball tournament begins Friday evening, continues all day Saturday with the tournament ending on Sunday afternoon.
People should gather at the tennis courts at 9:30 p.m. for family movie night which is sponsored by the Winthrop Royalty. People are asked to bring chairs or blankets to sit on.
The kids midway, which includes an obstacle course, bounce houses and water slide will be available Friday 4 p.m.-8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-7 p.m. These activities will now be located at the baseball field.
Thunder and Lightning DJ will end the night under the big tent as they will play from, 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
“We are trying to gear more events toward families and teens this year. It’s hard to keep the kids in the park so we are putting on more activities for them to keep them in the park all weekend long,” said Melissa Hanson.
Saturday starts with a sheephead tournament under the tent at 9 a.m.
There will be a home business/craft fair from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and that will continue on Sunday as the same times. The displays will be located north of the beer stand where the blowup have been located in previous years.
The local T-Ball teams will be playing at 11 a.m.
The GFW FFA petting zoo will be on display 11 a/m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It has a new location as it will now be by the tank and beer stand.
Kids are encouraged to sign up for the kids pedal pull at 10:30 a.m. with the event beginning at 11 a.m. near the big tent.
Jolly Pops kids program will be held at the south park shelter at noon and is sponsored by the Winthrop Public Library.
Thunder and Lightning DJ will be back under the tent from noon to 4 p.m.
The Winthrop Police Department is sponsoring a bike rodeo from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. with a children’s bike giveaway to follow at 2 p.m. Children must be present to win.
Kids arts and crafts will be held in the south park shelter 1 p.m.-3 p.m. and is sponsored by the GFW ECFE.
A canvas paint class is being held in the north park shelter for kids 3 p.m.-4 p.m. and adults 4:30 p.m.-6 p.m.
The adult puzzle palooza will be held at Tanker Bay at 8:30 p.m. This includes a 500-piece puzzle, beer and pizza.
Red Dirt Road will be the entertainment at the street dance in downtown Winthrop near Tanker Bay beginning at 9 p.m.
An ecumenical service will begin Sunday’s events in the big tent at 8 a.m.
The Car Show is celebrating its 21st year and is located at the northeast corner of the park beginning at 10 a.m.
Schell’s Hobo Band performs at the car show for one hour beginning at 12:30 p.m.
The Great Parade will begin at 2 p.m. and follow its normal route along the streets surrounding the park.
The big tent will be the site of the Concord Singers performance at 3 p.m.
Following the parade, check out the chicken BBQ. They will begin serving at 3 p.m.
Another new event is family pond ball which will be located near the volleyball courts beginning at 5 p.m. Kiddie pools will serve as the bases for this kickball game.
Mages Family Band will provide the entertainment in the tent from 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
GFW Bi-County baseball will be playing at the north field at 6:30 p.m.
Make sure you have your raffle tickets as the big raffle drawing will be held in the tent at 7 p.m.
