Lafayette area WWII vets are ‘always there’

by Ruth Klossner
Like clockwork, World War II veterans Carl Martens and Narve Nelson take part in as many Veterans’ Day events as they can fit in their day. They might start with a Vets’ breakfast and or lunch in New Ulm, but always finish with the Nicollet County Veterans Day dinner at Nicollet.
Both are 96, with Martens the oldest by four months.
Carl is legally blind but loves to visit and does amazingly well at recognizing people’s voices and quickly starting up a conversation.
Nelson still drives, but got a ride to the Nicollet County Veterans’ dinner at Nicollet Saturday with fellow Lafayette American Legion members.
