The GFW School Board was told at its November 20th meeting that it will have to starting looking for a new mascot. The Thunderbird has ties to Native American descent and the District had been told to change their logo. Superintendent Jeff Horton stated that the District applied for an exemption but received negative responses from two Tribal Nations.
At its work session on Monday, the School Board discussed steps going forward. The Board could make the decision, have the staff and students decide or open it up to the whole community. The general consensus was to open the topic up for community input.
Some members of the Board also had heard comments that this might be a good time to change the school name from GFW. (It was noted that the name does not have to change.) However, the directors did decide to keep the same school colors going forward. Changing color would have resulted in new athletic uniforms for sports and other organizations.
