O’Neill retires from GFW

by Michael Mattison
For the past 29 years, Sue O’Neill has been a fixture at GFW Schools. She has been a long-time member of the English staff and retired at the end of the 2025-2026 school year.
O’Neill’s family moved to Winthrop when she was a freshmen. They moved here from Sleepy Eye. She graduated from Winthrop High School but education was her third career.
She got a degree from Mankato State University in 1984 in mass communications with a public relations concentration. She worked in marketing and advertising as a writer and lead writer. She then went back to school to get a teaching degree but then went into the health insurance industry and later back into advertising. She then had two children but was laid off from her job when her son Andy was less than a couple of months old.
