James Howard Zobel

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of James Howard Zobel AKA “Butch”, who passed away on Friday, March 13th, 2026, at the age of 70 in transit to Abbot Memorial Hospital.
James was born on February 19th, 1956 in Springfield, MN, to Howard Zobel and Willie Stroud. He spent his life dedicated to his family, his hobbies, and relaxing in his retirement. His legacy continues through the memories, laughter and the kindness of his heart.
James attended college at Ridgewater College as a tool maker. He has worked as a machinist, tool maker and maintenance. He was known for his kind heart and dedication to his numerous hobbies/collections of antiques.
Above all, James’s life was precious time spent with family and friends.
James is survived by his children: Justin Thomas, Nathan Zobel, and Nicholas Zobel, his grandchildren Latanya Galliando, Shayla Donovan, Natalie Donovan, Nicole Donovan, Astri Zobel and Iona Zobel, niece Linda Fischer, nieces and nephews, and other loved ones.
James was preceded in death by Howard Zobel (father), Willie Stroud (mother), John Burden (brother), Jerry Burden (brother), Norma Kingery (sister), and other family members.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 26th, 2026, at 10 a.m. –1 p.m. at the Flandrau State Park—Beach House in New Ulm, MN. Family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate James’s life. There will be lunch provided around 12 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice in James’s memory.
Though deeply missed, James will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved them. Their legacy of love, compassion and friendliness will continue to inspire future generations.
