Community Organization Spotlight: Lafayette Lions

by Maggie Buettner
The Lafayette Lions Club was chartered with 57 members on Saturday, May 5, 1979 originally as the Lafayette-Bernadotte Lions Club. The club’s name was officially changed to Lafayette Area Lions Club on July 22, 1986. Andy Maidl is the current president. According to member Ruth Klossner “We currently have 56 members, with 20 of them women. Lions Clubs, internationally, was an all-male organization until 1987 when women were allowed to join. Our club welcomed its first three women (Holly Wilson, Cheryl DeBoer, and Marilyn DeBoer) in 1995, with the next two joining in 1997.” The club’s first woman president was Ruth Klossner in 2004-05 and three other women have served as president since.
