Walk across country leads couple to Winthrop

by Michael Mattison
A journey across the United States on foot. Eight months. Over 3,000 miles. Faced with cold, wind, rain, snow and heat. Sometimes in combination. It helped to lead Chris and Erin Rae to move from the Twin Cities to rural Winthrop.
About 17 years ago, Erin had a best friend that she walked with every day and they talked about walking across the country. At the time she was a single-parent which wasn’t ideal. So she started saving money. She then met Chris and she told him about her plan which would take about a year.
Chris was fine with that but her friend backed out and he had to make a decision. He talked with his pastor who said he should go and then found some inspiration. The pastor’s idea for Chris for a book was what are you grateful for. They were to watch for a sign. The next day, a bumper sticker on the car in front of them said “What are you grateful for.” Chris was now on his way.
