Testimony begins in Bauer murder trial

Witnesses were called for a second day on Monday in the Travis Bauer murder trial. Originally charged with second degree murder, a grand jury indicted Bauer and he is now facing first degree murder charges in the shooting death of Dennis Weitzenkamp.
Jury selection concluded on Thursday. Opening statements were given on Friday and the prosecution began laying out its case on Friday as well by calling its first witnesses.
Sibley County Attorney Don Lannoye estimated that the prosecution could wrap up its case by calling its final witnesses on Wednesday or Thursday.
On September 20, 2022, law enforcement was called to a farmstead in rural Winthrop and found Weitzenkamp unresponsive. An autopsy was performed the following day revealing he was shot in the back of the head with a small caliber bullet.
