Council abates another property

by Michael Mattison
The Winthrop City Council approved the abatement of 213 South Nicollet Street at it regular meeting on Monday, May 5. The decision came later in the meeting after a public hearing on the issue was held.
The property falls under health and safety, stated City Administrator Michael Looft. The area is zoned residential and appears to be a salvage yard business. “This clearly is against our codes and ordinances. We certainly wouldn’t want to put people at risk again.” There are a number of propane tanks on the property as well. Photos showed that a week prior to the meeting there were two propane tanks on the property and now there were five.
Councilwoman Jenny O’Connor said that the property owner was in last year asking for more time to get things in order and it was granted by Council.
