Good weather allows work on splash pad

There is good news surrounding the splash pad in Winthrop City Park. After the original concrete pad had to be torn up, it was feared that work on the splash pad wouldn’t be able to begin until next spring. But the weather provided an opportunity for some work to be done last week.
According to Winthrop City Administrator Michael Looft, the plumbing, electrical and electrical grounding was replaced and State inspected. The specifications were met and therefore they were allowed to pour concrete last week.
The concrete was poured in two phases. The first phase was the north half of the splash pad and the second phase was the southern half. This was done to ensure the concrete set correctly and the angels were set correctly. The broom marks, also known as scratch, is intentional and ensures that the surface is not slippery when wet.
Last week specifications for the bench pads and benches were also released to be installed the following week.
Looft said portions of the remainder of the project could occur this week and then in the spring.
VADA (not the splash pad company) will be pouring additional concrete this week, weather permitting. This will be for the benches that surround the splash pad.
The benches will be installed next week after the concrete has hardened.
Splash pad spray elements will be installed next week as well (Nov. 24) and pressure tests will be done as long as it stays relatively warm. The pressure tests are needed to be opened this next spring with State specifications.
Next spring additional bushes and grass will be planted as part of the original plan.
The State will also test specifications, to make sure the water recycler is functioning properly in spring of 2026.
