From Lafayette to Guatemala

byRuth Klossner
Michelle Oswald’s January travels took her to a warmer climate—but not just to soak up the sun. Instead, she joined an A’kala Family Foundation mission trip to San Lucas, Guatemala.
It’s something she’s been thinking about for some time.
Michelle grew up in a family of 12, with a mother who spent a lot of time sewing, quilting and sharing with others.
“My mom took time to make a lot of quilts. Some went to the Appalachian Mountain area, some to Nigeria. So it’s my mom’s fault,” Oswald said with a smile. “I observed that my entire life. She was sewing until the last weeks of her life. Her work went to warm people in different places.”
