local girls compete in Battle of the Books

by Michael Mattison
Four local girls competed Saturday in the Battle of the Books competition in st. peter.
Megan Hacker, Sofia Nachreiner, Kaydence Jutz and Shaylah Clobes are the four members of The Overdue Book Club and they did a fantastic job, finishing fourth out of 11 teams in their division.
The four eighth graders thought this competition would be fun and each of them enjoy reading. One of their mothers found a post on Facebook about the event.
The girls had to read four books that would be part of the competition. At the competition, there are four rounds of questions that will be asked about the books they read.
They got the books at the end of May and started reading them immediately. They had eight weeks to get prepared.
Every two weeks they would get together to discuss. They took notes along the way to keep their memories fresh on what they had read.
They all agreed on enjoying two of the books and the other two not so much.
Of the books they liked, We Are Not Free is about the Japanese Americans in California and their persecution during World War II.
This Woven Kingdom is about a woman who doesn’t realize that she is a queen. After her parents die, she takes on a job as a maid. A prince meets her and they fall in love.
Everything Sad Is Untrue deals with a young man from Iran who has to leave his country and talks about his experiences leaving and coming to America.
The Infinite Particle is about a girl that lives on Mars that makes a robot. It becomes a love story.
Hacker came up with the name The Overdue Book Club. Her aunt designed the shirts which were paid for by the Winthrop Library.
Nachreiner said the most enjoyable part of the process has been meeting up during the summer with her friends and talking about the books and life. Clobes also enjoyed reading new genres of books.
TdS, the library system that serves nine counties, hosted the event.
