Bauer convicted of second degree murder
by Michael Mattison
Travis Bauer was found guilty of second degree intentional murder in the shooting death of Dennis Weitzenkamp on Friday.
Closing statements were given by both the prosecution and defense on Friday morning and the jury came back with its verdict later in the evening. The jury found Bauer not guilty of first degree murder.
Sibley County Attorney Don Lannoye anticipates that sentencing will take place in about 60 days. Bauer has been remanded into custody and remains in McLeod County Jail. The presumptive sentence is between 261 and 367 months imprisonment.
Lannoye stated, “The jury made a decision that Travis Bauer killed Dennis Weitzenkamp. We believe the evidence in this case only pointed to one person. We are pleased with this verdict, and we look forward to the Sentencing Hearing where we will argue for accountability in taking the life of another.”
