Maiers participates in State Visual Arts Festival

by Michael Mattison
Faith Maiers created an art piece that qualify for the Minnesota State High School League Visual Arts State Festival which was held May 10th at the Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley.
Seven students in the art club at GFW High School got a chance to create pieces and participate in the Section 2A Visual Arts Contest, April 9th, at TCU High School in Montgomery. All of the GFW students received superior ratings and Maiers received the Spotlight Award.
She said she didn’t know what she wanted to do for her competition piece. “I knew this would be my last big project that I would do for school. I wanted it to mean something to me and put my blood, sweat and tears into it.” She ended up making a sculpture because she found she was pretty good at working with clay.
She started the project three months after school began and finished it a week before the competition. She got a lot of help from Rachel Dauer the art teacher at GFW.
Her artwork was entitled “Silenced Imagination”. She first had to come up with a sketch. The first concept was a bust with a hole in the head with flowers coming up of it with a broken mouth.
