Local Lions members receive awards
Lion Marlene Roepke was presented with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from Lion Patty McCarthy and Winthrop Lions President Chuck Toltzman. Lion Patty had won the right to the award from a convention raffle and decided it should be presented to her dear friend and stalwart Lion, Marlene. The Melvin Jones Fellowship is named as a tribute to the founder of Lions Clubs International, Melvin Jones. Designated as Lions Clubs International Foundation’s highest honor, the fellowship symbolizes the characteristics of individuals who are dedicated to humanitarian service. Those attributes are generosity, compassion and concern for others. Two of Lion Marlene’s children, Scott Roepke and Dawn Nesburg, were able to be present for the presentation. Winthrop Lions Club President, and board member of the MN Lions Childhood Cancer Foundation, Chuck Toltzman received the Childhood Cancer Foundation’s Believe Award, presented by Foundation Treasurer, Lion Tom McCarthy. Lion Chuck’s wife, Linda attended the presentation. Lion Chuck has served as Winthrop Lions President for several years and has been on the Foundation Board since 2019. The Believe Award is the Foundation’s recognition of Lions and others who have donated to the Foundation and who have demonstrated commitment to the fight against childhood cancer.
