Garcia enjoying her foreign exchange student experience

by Michael Mattison
Maria Soto Garcia is GFW’s latest foreign exchange student. She comes to Winthrop from Galicia, Spain, and her host family is Ray and Merline Duering.
A friend of Maria’s brother was an exchange student in Canada. When she was 11, Maria told her parents that she wanted to go to the United States.
Her first impression of Winthrop was that it was “really small and cold.”
With the differing populations, Maria said that she doesn’t see people on the streets here. “In my city, there are people in the streets all the time. In the summer people stay out in the city until 2 o’clock.
“There are always little kids running and shouting, making noise. Here it is really relaxed.”
