Margaret was born on December 27, 1929, in Bernadotte, Minnesota, the eldest daughter of Nemerd and Sigrid (Anderson) Monson. Margaret was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth on May 21, 1944, at Bernadotte Lutheran Church. She received her education in Winthrop and was a graduate of the Winthrop High School Class of 1947. On August 28, 1949, Margaret was united in marriage to Ray Sallstrom at Bernadotte Lutheran Church by the Reverend O.J. Erickson. This union was blessed with 73 years of marriage and three children. In her early years she did bookkeeping at the milk plant and coop. The couple lived on their farm in Bismarck Township, Sibley County, from 1949-1990. They then moved into Winthrop where their home quickly became a gathering place for family and friends to enjoy fellowship with treats and hot coffee for the next 30 years, until 2020. Margaret had an impeccable talent for counted cross-stitching and blessed loved ones with her finished projects. She was very proud of her Swedish heritage and celebrated in many ways. She enjoyed summers at Lake Washington, playing Bridge, volunteering as camp “grandparents” at Green Lake Bible Camp, clowning with the Hutch Clown Club, traveling worldwide and many years of involvement with 4-H. Her community involvement included helping with election day, the bloodmobile, and volunteering with the kindergarten class. Margaret received the Winthrop Good Citizen Award in 2013. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Winthrop, where she was involved in many church organizations. She cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and will always be remembered for her incredible hospitality, a listening ear, and an encouraging word to all who knew her.
