Firebirds fall to Springfield, host Mayer Lutheran in playoffs

by Michael Mattison
The GFW Firebirds football team finished its regular season on the road at Springfield. The Firebirds would lose 42-14. GFW will host a home playoff game Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Mayer Lutheran.
The Firebirds got the ball first and would move it down the field against the Tigers of Springfield. Quarterback Owen Swenson started the drive with an 11-yard run from the 37-yard line. A 5-yard run by Garrett Stegeman and a 6-yard run by Matthew Lee gave GFW another first down. Faced with a fourth down-and-one at the Springfield 32-yard line Lee went for six yards. Unfortunately, a fumble two plays later gave the ball to Springfield at its own 30-yard line.
It took the Tigers just one play to score but the extra point was blocked and GFW trailed 6-0.
