Firebirds fall to Springfield 94-51

by Michael Mattison
The Springfield Tigers boys basketball team invaded Winthrop last week and handed the GFW Firebirds a 94-51 loss.
A three-pointer and two free throws from Cole Jacobson would put GFW on top 5-2 but that would be the only lead the Firebirds held in the game.
Springfield scored the next 17 points to go up 19-5.
GFW would make a mini comeback started by another three from Jacobson. After a Tigers’ free throw, Kaden Rieke came up with a steal and went coast-to-coast for a layup. Jacobson then hit Rieke with a nice pass which he finished with a layup. Two free throws by Springfield were countered by a Matthew Lee bucket in the post and GFW trailed 22-14.
Triples by Rieke and Jacobson would keep the Firebirds within 10 points at 30-20 before the Tigers ended the first half on a 17-2 run, including the final 13 points for a 47-22 halftime lead.
Jacobson opened the second half driving the lane for a layup and adding a pair of free throws. He would add two more from the charity stripe and then assist on a Lee layup. Rieke then finished off a fast break after a steal and assist from Jacobson. Lee then cut down the lane and scored off a nice pass from Rieke. Despite the offensive surge in the first four minutes of the half, GFW still trailed 57-34.
Jacobson led the team in scoring with 24 points while Rieke added 10 points and Lee eight.
