Firebirds go 1-1 in Section Tournament

by Michael Mattison
The season came to an end for the GFW Firebirds boys basketball team on Thursday evening when Madelia defeated GFW 76-69 in the Section quarterfinals. The Firebirds opened the Section Tournament at home with a 76-65 victory over Sleepy Eye.
The Firebirds opened up against Sleepy Eye quickly as Owen Swenson scored on a fast-break layup and one off a Cole Jacobson assist. Down 5-3, Jacobson made a scoop shot in the lane, Matthew Lee scored on a layup off a dish by Luke Bastian and Jacobson canned a three-ball for an 11-5 lead.
Sleepy Eye crept back in and would hold a 28-27 lead with just over four minutes to play in the first half. That’s when Jacobson went to work. He hit two shots from long distance, sandwiching a short jumper as GFW led 35-28. Cade Klages would score on a Jacobson-assisted layup late in the half and GFW led 37-34.
